@brandonb4178 years agoSince the anode and cathode are in the same tank, you' re just breaking apart the hydrogen and oxygen, and they' re both going down the tube and cool idea with the blades though, looks like it does a good job with the high surface area. if you want to separate the h and o2, have the anode in one tank and the cathode in another, but have the tanks connected by a water bridge. Then you' ll get h off one side and o2 off the other. ...Expand41
@
@piranha0310918 years agoYou should never do that using a glass container: you' ll end up with an explosive mixture of hydrogen and oxygen in that container, so you have quite if it is made of glass, the explosion will cause glass shrapnel, which can be deadly. A colleague of mine took a glass shrapnel to the throat a few months ago, and almost died of what was otherwise a very minor explosion) plastic is much safer for this. ...Expand222

@DwightWilbanks8 years agoA few thoughts. thought 1, is if the blades were vertical, the bubbles would flow to the top faster. By separating from your plates, your plates second thought is about voltage efficiency. The ideal voltage is between 2 and 2. 5 volts, as you drop down below that voltage the production drops off. As you raise above ideal, you still get more bubbles, but, in addition, more heat is produced. The further away from ideal, give you less and less efficiency. if you have 5 volt source, you should use a neutral plate (plenty of google explanations) so, plate 1 is positive, plate 2 is not attached to anything, plate 3 is negative, then repeat. The 5 volt total difference is broken down to two separate segments of 2. 5 volts. Obviously your goal is not to make the most effective industrial grade tool, but, with very minor tweaks to your design you can improve efficiency. Since there are fewer connections, its actually slightly less work as a side benefit. ...Expand39

@CK510008 years agoI would make it to generate the hydrogen and oxygen to separate sections to be mixed at the tip. Just like a real oxy/acetylene torch. sodium id="hidden6" carbonate might be better electrolyte. i thought of making a setup with the carbons from batteries such that the container would float and when certain amount of gas is generated the carbons would be lifted out of the electrolyte. The weight of the containers would provide pressure. Etc. your setup could blow up pretty easily. ...Expand20

@tumitoto7 years agoIs this cost effective or not? Since you need a power source to start, i am not sure if the heat generated with this thing will be better than just use the battery power.
@
@TheControlPhilosopher8 years ago1. What you are generating is a mixtureo use of h2 + 02 in a 2: 1 voluminar ratio. 2. For pure hydrogen gas, you have to use a bottle with caustic 3. I wish you come up with a design that separates the cathode and anode using some membrane that can withstand temperatures of 100 degrees + because at higher currents the water heats up as well. 4. You must not put a great deal of salt in the water. A pinch of salt in 1 litre is more than sufficient for conduction. If you use more salt, you are actually generating hydrogen along with chlorine at the anode. The water will turn alkaline as the sodium ions will react with water to form naoh. The chlorine will generate at anode and corrode the electrode. So you have to use carbon electrodes. ...Expand37

@vishva8kumara8 years agoAwesome work. This is inspirational for me to make something like that. Would be great to make a soldering iron for using in soldering microchips or as adding too much salt will make your flash-arrestor (clean water bottle) build up hcl eventually. There is clearly sodium colloidals that would be making naoh on your electrolysis jar. a drop of lime or vinegar instead would also help the electrolysis while slowing any discoloration due to waste chemical build up - since those are organic acids; which are slow to react since they are large molecules. just my two cents. simply, i think you have put a little too much salt to the jar. ...Expand1
